Theme Updater will install the latest theme as an unpublished (Draft) theme on the Themes page of your dashboard, carrying over as much content as possible from the previous theme. This is only possible for certain versions, however.
Check your current version then confirm if it is a compatible version to determine if the Theme Updater can ease the update process.
Compare your version number
To find the version number for the theme, access the theme editor (Customize), then open the more menu [···]. The version number is displayed here with two decimal points (e.g. Startup 10.0.0).

Full compatibility
Versions listed with Full compatibility offer the best results for transferring content, global settings, and customizations.
Limited compatibility
Versions listed with Limited compatibility are only capable of transferring theme setting configurations and most content will need to be manually transferred to the latest version.
When updating to an Online Store 2.0-compatible version, the Theme Updater is only able to preserve global theme settings (e.g. Colors, Typography). Content such as homepage sections will need to be rebuilt. This is a one-time process that is required to align with new templating standards and maintain theme performance.
Not compatible
Versions listed as Not compatible are unable to transfer settings, content, and customizations.
A manual update process is required for these versions and Theme Updater can only provide the latest version in its default state.
