The Age gate setting lets you display an age verification overlay before customers can access your storefront. This is useful for stores that sell age-restricted products or need visitors to confirm they meet a minimum age requirement before browsing.
Open the Age gate settings
To access the Age gate settings:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- Find your Empire theme, then select Edit theme.
- In the theme editor, select the Theme settings gear icon.
- Open Age gate.
Enable test mode
Use Enable test mode to preview the age gate overlay in the theme editor.
When test mode is enabled, the age gate will appear while previewing the theme. This allows you to review the age gate before making it visible to customers.
Note: Disable test mode when you are finished previewing.
Image suggestion: Add a screenshot showing the Enable test mode toggle turned on.
Enable the age gate site-wide
To show the age gate to customers, enable Site-wide.
Once enabled, the age gate overlay will appear before customers can access your storefront.
Image suggestion: Add a screenshot showing the Enable site-wide toggle turned on.
Set the minimum age
Use the Minimum age required to access site field to enter the required age for visitors.
For example, entering 18 means customers must confirm they are at least 18 years old before accessing the store.
Customize the age gate text
You can update the text shown on the age gate overlay using the available fields:
Show your logo
Enable Show logo to display your store logo on the age gate overlay.
The logo is managed from the theme’s Brand settings. To update the logo, go to Theme settings > Brand.
Image suggestion: Add a screenshot showing the Show logo toggle enabled, then another screenshot of the storefront preview with the logo displayed on the age gate.
Save your changes
After adjusting the age gate settings, select Save in the theme editor.
Your age gate will now appear based on the settings you configured.
Troubleshooting
If the age gate is not appearing on your storefront, check the following:
| Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| Age gate only appears in the theme editor | Enable test mode may be turned on, but Enable site-wide may still be disabled. |
| Age gate does not appear in preview | Turn on Enable test mode to preview it in the theme editor. |
| Logo is not appearing | Make sure Show logo is enabled and a logo has been added under Theme settings > Brand. |
| Customers can access the site without seeing the age gate | Confirm that Enable site-wide is turned on and the theme changes have been saved. |
