Product templates control the sections, blocks, and layout displayed on your product pages. By default, products use the Default product template.
If you’ve created an alternate product template, you can assign it to multiple products at once using Shopify’s Bulk editor.
Before you begin
Make sure the product template you want to assign has already been created.
Shopify’s product admin displays templates available in your currently published theme. If you created a new product template in an unpublished theme and don’t see it as an option, this is expected.
Note: Changes made to a product template affect all products assigned to that template. If products need different content while using the same layout, consider using metafields and dynamic sources instead of creating a separate template for each product.
Batch-assign a template to products
- Open Products in your Shopify admin
- Use the checkboxes beside each product to select the products for the template
- Select Edit products
- In the Bulk editor, select Add fields then Template
- Use the new column for Template to adjust each product
- Once all the products have the template adjusted, click Save
Creating additional templates with the theme editor
Not seeing your product template?
If a product template isn’t available in the Template selector, confirm that the template exists in your currently published theme.
Shopify uses templates from the published theme when displaying template options in the product admin. As a result, a new template created only in an unpublished theme might not appear as an option.
If you’re preparing a new theme before publishing it, you can still use the Theme Editor to preview products with the new template and confirm the layout before making the theme live.
Test the assigned product template
After assigning a template, open one of the affected products on your storefront and confirm that the expected layout appears.
Check that:
- The correct sections and blocks are displayed.
- Product information appears as expected.
- Images and other product media display correctly.
- The page works as expected on desktop and mobile.
If you assigned the template to multiple products, check several products to confirm that they all display correctly.
How product templates work
Products assigned to the same template share the template’s layout, sections, blocks, and section settings.
For example, if several products use the same alternate product template and you add a new section to that template, the section will appear on all products assigned to it.
If you need the same section to display different content for each product, consider using metafields and dynamic sources. These allow supported theme settings to display product-specific information while keeping products assigned to the same template.
