Make it easier for international customers to understand your product prices by configuring your store’s currency settings and enabling the appropriate country or currency selector.
Currency settings are managed primarily through Shopify. Your Pixel Union theme provides storefront options that work with Shopify’s international selling features.
Configure store currency formatting
Your store’s primary currency is configured in the Shopify admin.
Shopify’s currency formatting settings determine how prices in your store currency appear on your storefront. Depending on your setup, you can customize elements such as currency symbols, currency codes, decimal places, and separators.
For example, you may want prices to display as:
- $10.00
- $10 USD
- 10,00 €
Currency formatting applies to your store currency. If you sell in additional currencies through Shopify Markets, the formatting and display of those currencies are handled separately by Shopify.
For instructions on adjusting your currency formatting, see Shopify’s guide:
Formatting how currency displays to your customers
Note: Be careful when modifying Shopify’s currency formatting. Incorrect HTML or Liquid added to these fields can cause prices to display incorrectly throughout your storefront.
Choose a country or currency selector
If you sell internationally, you can provide customers with a selector that allows them to choose the appropriate shopping experience for their location.
Depending on your theme and theme version, you may have access to a Country selector, Currency selector, or both.
Country selector
The Country selector allows customers to select the country or region they’re shopping from.
When used with Shopify Markets, changing the selected country can affect the customer’s shopping experience based on how you’ve configured that market, including the currency available to the customer.
This is generally the recommended option for stores using Shopify Markets to sell internationally.
Currency selector
The Currency selector allows customers to select from the currencies available for your store.
This provides a simpler currency-selection experience when supported by your theme and Shopify configuration.
Availability of these settings can vary by theme and theme version.
For setup instructions and compatibility information, see: Using the country/currency selector
Set up multiple currencies
The country and currency selectors in your theme work with the currencies and markets you’ve configured through Shopify.
Before enabling a selector in your theme, make sure you’ve configured the countries, regions, and currencies you want to support in your Shopify admin.
Your theme doesn’t create additional currencies or determine exchange rates. These features are managed by Shopify and your store’s payment and Markets configuration.
For more information about selling in multiple currencies, see: Shopify: Selling and getting paid in different currencies
Country and currency selectors vs. currency converters
Current Pixel Union themes use Shopify’s native international selling features rather than the legacy theme-based currency converter.
A currency converter typically converted prices for display purposes while the store continued operating in its primary currency. Shopify’s current international selling features provide a more integrated experience, allowing supported stores to present currencies according to their Shopify Markets and payment configuration.
If you’re using an older theme version that includes a legacy currency converter, consider updating to the latest theme version to access the current features available for your theme.
Troubleshooting currency display
If currencies aren’t displaying as expected, check the following before making changes to your theme code:
- Confirm that your countries and regions are configured correctly in Shopify Markets.
- Confirm that the currencies you want to offer are available for your Markets and payment configuration.
- Check that the appropriate Country selector or Currency selector is enabled in the Theme Editor.
- Preview your store and test the selector.
- Check whether any third-party apps or custom code are modifying currency or price displays.
If the selector is working correctly but a particular currency, exchange rate, market, or checkout currency isn’t available, review your Shopify Markets and payment settings or contact Shopify Support. These settings are managed by Shopify rather than the theme.
