Setting up product images with specific variants is common and allows customers to view examples of the product in its different forms, styles, etc. When a customer selects a variant, the image associated with that option will display under the right conditions.
If this is not occurring in your theme, check product editor settings, check theme editor settings for product page image display, and check added apps to resolve the issue.
Check product editor settings
Starting at the source is always best for issues like this, so begin by visiting the product editor for the affected product. Confirm here that the desired variants each have images assigned to them.
If there is a missing image, there will be a basic placeholder icon. Click this icon to add your image.
Check theme editor settings for product page image display
Certain themes include display options for additional product images that disable the image and variant interaction.
Access product page image settings
- In the theme editor (Customize), use the page selector to open Products then Default product
- Open Product pages in the left sidebar
- Locate the Media portion
If you're using the Atlantic theme, the List view option will not change the images when a variant is selected. Likewise, the Grid theme's List and Masonry options will not change images when variants are selected.
Check added apps
Some apps influence the behavior of product images, so go to your Apps admin to consider if any apps in use are involved with product images. If so, it would be worth contacting the app's developers for assistance.
Removing an app from the Apps admin is not always enough for uninstalling an app. Many apps involve direct adjustments to the theme files, so always consider past, as well as current, app installations.
