Choosing when to show a popup to customers is just as important as choosing when not to. Maybe you want your email signup to stop showing to people who have already signed up to your newsletter. Or maybe you want to only show a popup once a day, so if people are making multiple visits to your site they don’t see it every time. Either way, you can do it with Pixelpop's Display Frequency feature. There’s quite a few options to choose from, so let’s get started!
To access the Display Frequency settings, head over to the Options section of the popup editor. This is the third (and final) page of settings before making your popup live. You’ll see an area titled Display Frequency — if you click the Edit button, you’ll see the settings box popup.
By default, the popups are set to show on every page view, and to stop after the customer either closes the popup or interacts with the popup in some way (by clicking on a link or entering their email address, for example.)
The Display Schedule section is the area to decide how often your popup gets displayed to your customers. There are three options:
You can choose to Display on every page view, Display once every day/week/month, or Display once every number of visits.
Note: A ‘day’ is a 24-hour period. For example, if you select ‘Display once every 1 day,' this will display a popup for the customer when they arrive on the page — the popup will then only appear 24 hours after the popup is closed. The ‘week’ and ‘month’ is also based on a 24-hour calculation.
Display on every page view: This will display the popup on the homepage, as well as any subsequent page clicked on, until the stopping conditions are met.
Display once every 1 day: This option allows you to set the popup to display on any amount of days, weeks, or month! Use the box where there’s a 1 to type a number, and use the ‘day’ dropdown menu to select either day, week, or month.
Display once every 1 visit: This can be used to target visitors based on how often they’re visiting your store. You can decide to show a popup every 3 visits, which could all happen in one day, as opposed to every 3 days.
A ‘website visit’, often referred to as a ‘session’, is a period of time spent on a website. It will be the period of time from when you land on your first page of the website (the homepage, collections list, etc) to any other pages. If at any point you leave the store by either closing the browser window or navigating to another website, this ends the ‘visit’ — when you go back to the store, it begins a new ‘visit’. This is an important rule to keep in mind when setting your display frequency!
Now that you’ve decided on how often to show the popup to your customers, time to figure out what happens after they see it! Setting stopping conditions will allow you to make sure your customers don’t get bogged down by too many popups.
The default settings are to Stop displaying to a visitor after they close the popup as well as Stop displaying to a visitor after they submit an email or click a button. These are a great combination because it means that no matter what type of popup you’ve setup, your customers won’t see the popup after they’ve closed it.
Stop displaying to visitor after they close the popup: This one is pretty self-explanatory!
Stop displaying to visitor after they submit an email or click a button: This is great for the Page Promotion, Cookie Disclaimer, or Email Signup popup types! It ensures that if your customers click a link on the popup (like a link to another page for example) or if they sign up to the newsletter, the popup will stop displaying.
Stop displaying to visitor after 1 time: Best practice for this one is to use it in partnership with the Display once every 1 visit option in the Display schedule section. This can be used to stop showing a popup regardless of whether customers interact with the popups or not.
That’s it! Make sure that you click the Save and close button so that your settings are saved. To test the conditions out yourself, try viewing the popup from the storefront!
