Welcome to The Complete Guide to Customizing your Notifications. The first thing you will need to do is go into your Settings page where you will find all the sections you need to customize your notifications.
To start, make sure your notifications are enabled. They will be enabled by default, but if you'd like to temporarily disable them, you can use the button. If you disable your notifications they will be disabled permanently until you enable them again.
Note: if you/your customers click the ‘x’ to close notifications from the storefront at any point, you will no longer see the notifications.
Display notifications in random order instead of default descending order
Your notifications are based on your orders as they come in, so by default, they will show up this way. When this is checked, it will ensure your notifications show up in random order instead of the default descending order.
Show notifications on mobile devices
Check this option off if you want your notifications to show on mobile devices. If you would prefer not to have them on mobile, you can uncheck this section and the notification will only show on desktop.
Repeat old notifications when no new ones are available
If you find you are not getting consistent orders from your customers, this is a good option! This will repeat old notifications when there aren't many new orders coming through.
Show the close button on notifications (allow dismissal)
If you check this off it will allow your notification to be exited out by your customers. You can choose to un-check, which will force the notifications to always be visible to customers.
This is the format for how your notifications will be displayed. You can choose the order of the format using the specified labels below. Due to an update in order for us to fit with GDPR regulations, we only have the option of ‘Someone’ in place of first/last names. This is the default within our app and cannot be changed. Please keep in mind that we made this change with the best intentions of our merchants and their customers in mind. Use these labels to pull information in automatically from the orders, you can do so by clicking them.
The data you input in this section will appear if your orders don't come through already with the relevant information from the customer. Your best option here is to put a believable area, for example, a nearby city.
You can set up the background color, text color, link color, and even the color of the Timestamp. You can play around with the size of your notification and find what looks best to you.
The most important part of this section is setting the position of your notification under the Desktop/Tablet position. You can set notifications to come down from the top or bottom of your page, as well as from the left or right. This section completely depends on the setup of your store and where you feel the notification appears best.
If you would like to make any of your own personal customizations, we have the option of using custom CSS. An example of using the custom CSS would be targeting the custom font on your store. If you are not familiar with CSS please don't hesitate to get in touch with our support team with your request!
If you don't want certain products showing up in your notifications, no problem! You can exclude products either by using their product ID or by creating a tag.
Exclude product IDs
The Product ID is the string of numbers that appear at the end of your URL on your product page. The best way to find this is by going to your Shopify Admin > Products, and selecting the product you would like to hide. You can simply copy and paste the product ID into this section. An example of a product ID is yoursite.myshopify.com/products/ productIDhere.
Exclude product tags
If you already have tags created or need to create a tag specifically for this, this section is an easy way of excluding multiple products from notifications. You can tag products by going into your Shopify Admin > Products and selecting a product you would like to hide. From there you can create your desired tag, and proceed to tag all the products you would like to exclude from your notification.
Choose the primary language you would like your notification to appear with by clocking the dropdown menu. This can also be manually inputted into your notification message.
Max notifications per page
This is the maximum amount of times you would like your notifications to cycle through one page on your site.
Display events from the last how many days/months/etc
If you want to keep your notifications fresh you can set this to show only notifications from a few days ago. Of course, if you'd like to keep showing even older notifications you can set this back to keep those older notifications cycling through.
Timestamp max duration
Only add the 'time ago' timestamp on events within this duration. For example, only display the timestamp on order notifications that happened within the last hour.
Set this to how long your notification stays visible on the page when it first appears.
First notification delay
Set the amount of time before your first notification shows to a customer on your site.
Note: Anything over five seconds is actually quite a long time for someone to be on a page. It's good practice to set this notification to show up in the first few seconds, to ensure your customers see it.
Delay/randomize between notification
You can set the time between your first notification and when the next notification appears. If you would like the notifications to appear randomly and not at set times you can set them to random or in sequential order.
Use the additional options for some advanced display frequency. This section will allow you to determine reporting through Google Analytics, as well as displaying your notifications on third party websites.
You can enable Google Analytics for your notifications to track the performance. You'll need a UTM source and medium, both of which you can find within your Google Analytics account.
If you don’t want your notifications to appear on non-product pages, use this meta tag within your Pages. For example, if you want to hide them from the Blog page, you would go into your Shopify Admin > Online Store > Pages select the page you want to exclude the notifications on. Then you can select the show HTML section, which is where you will place the meta tag. The show HTML button looks like this <> and is on the right corner under the Content section. In this section, you can paste your meta tag at the top of the page to ensure the notifications don't show on that specific page.
Note: by default, your notifications will not show up on the checkout pages. This is a platform requirement as Shopify does not allow access to the checkout page.
You can use the script provided to paste into the code templates on a third-party website. This will allow your notifications to appear elsewhere.
